How Do I Know I'm Ready to Buy a Home?

Buying a home is a big investment! That's why we are here to offer step-by-step advice. Check out our list of Home Buying FAQs that will answer your most common questions about starting your home search.

How much should I budget for owning a home?

Besides the down payment, the largest expenditures for a home purchase are your monthly mortgage payment, insurance, and taxes.

In addition, it is important to keep in mind that there are additional expenses like utilities, maintenance, and trash collection. Start now setting aside a small amount each month to help pay for future home repairs.

How do I find a mortgage?

You've found the perfect home - now you just need to get your mortgage in place! Don't rush through this important piece of the process.

The first thing to do is research current rates, or ask your real estate agent to provide information. Then, compare lenders and their charges and loan options. There are 6 or 6 types of loans; you'll want to check if you pay charges over the life of the loan, or if you need to pay them up front.

How can I find a home inspector?

You can ask your real estate agent or friends to recommend an inspector. You can even research them online or in the Yellow Pages.

Is real estate a smart investment?

Real estate has a great ROI. However, it is very driven by local conditions that vary from community to community. You can check the newspaper, TV news, or NAR (National Association of Realtors) to find statistics on the real estate market.

How can I make a move easier on my family?

First, prepare your kids! Be very upbeat and talk openly about the move. You can plan a going-away party with friends and neighbors to help lessen anxiety.

Second, be flexible. Stressing about your upcoming move and each detail will only make things harder.

Last, trust the process. Buying a home may feel risky, but it's actually an opportunity for you and your family to grow. You can't predict what will happen, but that's why you have a trusted real estate agent to help you through.
